Lost 11 lbs so far...

For the past two months, I've been using My Fitness Pal, an app for my iPhone. I didn't have a serious amount of weight to lose, but 20 lbs is no small feat - the app has really helped me so far with taking care of those extra #s through giving me a realistic picture of what I'm eating vs. what I should be eating.

I'm still about 9 lbs away from my goal weight, which is what I weighed in high school and college (and when I had morning sickness while pregnant with my second baby, lawlz). I'm lucky to have never been "overweight", but sometime in the past year between finishing up grad school, starting a new job, having two kids under 2 years old, and moving, I started eating more crap food and drinking way way way way way way way too many iced lattes out of lack of time and energy . Which made me gain about 15 lbs from where I was at this time last year. Which put me 20 lbs over the weight where I feel my best. Life happens, what can you say?

So now I'm down 11 lbs! I'm feeling much better, and my work clothes starting to either get loose or fit comfortably again. I do my best to run 3 or 4 times a week, which I track in My Fitness Pal and the Map My Run app as well. I used to have a glass of wine every other night or so, but I haven't had any since I started this weight loss attempt. I have a feeling the last 9 pounds will be difficult to get off, simply because I've discovered that I have a persistent craving for Casa Magnifica seasoned tortilla chips from HEB and Ana's salsa, and that's pretty much all I want to eat for dinner every day...

Best. Weekend. Ever. (A follow up to our home search)

This weekend is Easter weekend, which is where folks in my religion celebrate new beginnings, starting with the resurrection of Jesus.

In the spirit of new beginnings, this weekend was a really excellent one. Some fantastic things happened in my personal life this weekend. On Thursday, the seller of the house we put an offer on (the fifth offer, as anyone knows who has followed our ongoing house search saga) decided, like every other seller in this crack-insane market, to launch all offers on the house (three others) into a bidding war. Dan called me after our realtor called him to let him know what was up, and I decided to lobby us into an attempt to CLOSE THIS DEAL. So we bid a quite significant amount over asking price. Next morning, our realtor texted Dan: "You got it!"

SWEET VICTORY. Even though we put our money where our mouth was this time, I still feel that we got a steal with that house. And it's still way way under our budget. I wanted to laugh maniacally after receiving that text.

Our house in under contract now, so we still have some things to get through before we literally CLOSE the deal. But at least those folks are locked in with us now. It ain't over till it's over.

While the business with our house was a high point of the weekend, a few other great things have happened in the past few days:
1. Our daughter's pnemonia is now completely cleared up
2. Our son's blocked tear duct that he's had his entire life is miraculously starting to look completely fine all of a sudden, so we may cancel his surgery (or at least postpone).
3. We got some long overdue family photos done by my dad.
4. I ate the most delicious dish I've ever experienced and it was something that Dan ordered but shared with me after I had intense food envy: lemongrass scallop salad from a local Thai restaurant.
5. I got compliments on my presentation style by two of my managers at work after one of the public speaking consultants who trained me sneaked in and sat in on a 4 hour long presentation my co-worker and I were giving.

It's much easier to document life when it's going well, but I won't forget how hard it was to get to these good points. Happy Easter.

House market on crack!

My husband and I have officially been looking for houses for the past week and a half. We've put in offers on 3 houses, all of which were either outbid (even when we offered over asking price), or were taken by someone else before our offer letter fax went through...

While we really do want to buy a house, we also don't wanna be taken for a ride by paying like, 50 grand more, than what the house is worth just because of a tight market. This experience is making us broaden our horizons, and open our minds to less, ahem, attractive houses...I wasn't planning on buying a house that needs remodeling, but looks like that may be on the agenda for us this year. At least we'll get to pick our own finishes? Oh please don't let there be asbestos....

At home with a sick girl.

I'm kicking it at home today because my daughter woke up with a fever and a cough. Daycare has been great, but what hasn't been great is the fact that the classmates pass around sicknesses, and that my husband and/or myself have had to stay home a day at least once a week since they started due to child illness. I need to get the kids some vitamins stat, because I don't know about you, but I don't have unlimited sick days at work. I've heard that the first few months of starting daycare are especially challenging with frequent illness, so I really do hope that it gets better. I can't really work from home while I'm caring for a sick toddler (or toddlers) either....so just utilizing those sick days, man.
